World's largest Food Security Policy (PMGKY)

Son: I'm hungry, I want food to eat.
Maa: Your father has lost his job, it's the time of COVID. People are dying due to deadly diseases. We are poor, I can't feed you food.

Father: I am back home.

Maa: Look, your son is hungry, you have lost your job. All savings are finished. How can I arrange food?

Father: I understand your grief and pain. It's not our only problem. Every other person is facing such a problem.

Don't worry, the government of India has initiated Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Yojana. It will provide us with relief from hunger problems. They will provide you with 5 kg of food grains and 1 kg of pulses. This started in COVID, which later got extended, as it helped a lot of poor and marginalised people. Almost 81.35 crore people benefited from this scheme. It is one of the biggest food security policies, where nobody stays hungry. Its been 12 years since the scheme has been launched.

The eligibility of the policy is that anybody who is poor who is below the poverty index is eligible. Elderly people above 60 years and who are widows are also eligible. It is under the ministry of finance as it is a nodal agency, but the distribution process is done by the Ministry of consumer affairs & public distribution. Did you know the amount allocated from 2026 to 27 is almost 2.27 lakh crore fund. The biggest advantage of the scheme is our hardworking farmers' cultivation of rice and wheat is being bought at MSP price by the government and that is being redirected to 81.35 crore poor people to protect them from hunger.
