We have all heard about the NIRMA washing powder brand. It was one of the most used and popular in the detergent sector. Back in time, people used to wash clothes with salt, soda, and ash and with other traditional methods. Karsenbai patel from Gujarat has recently completed his BSC degree and was working as a government employee back then. While sitting near the riverside, he saw all the people washing clothes with the same old things. At that moment, he decided to prepare the washing powder. It was a game-changing decision back then for a new journey.
A few days passed by and Karsenbai, after his working hours, he used to do research and development on detergent. Finally, the day arrived where he launched his NIRMA detergent. The journey was never easy and had full of obstacles. After preparing, he went to the retail stores and spoke about the NIRMA powder but none of them took him seriously.Karsenbai felt sad and disappointed, his intentions and product were true. His focus became even more intense, and he took a firm decision to quit his government job. As time was moving quickly, NIRMA was still in the beginning stage.
Karsenbai made a unique strategy which changed the entire journey. He went door to door, explained the product and demonstrated how it works and its benefits. Firmly told customers if the product fails, I would repay everything with interest. This strategy worked so effectively when people bought the product and used it. The result of the NIRMA powder was so satisfying, it became one of the popular brands across Gujarat and eventually India. Karsenbai collaborated with radio and advertising agencies for promotions. NIRMA targeted female audiences and homemakers, which created massive loyalty towards the products. Based on all these strategies, a wave of popularity began, and it gained 60% of market share.
The Downfall.
Every story has good and bad episodes in the journey. NIRMA became exceptionally popular and profitable. Due to new trends and competition, NIRMA couldn't adapt to new trends quickly. The competitors have bashed NIRMA and its quality, indirectly calling it a cheap product. Karsenbai also focused more on the education business, cement, and university. The other businesses have occupied the space of NIRMA. This expansion of business led to the downfall of NIRMA detergent. Once upon a time it was a crazy business model which reached the deepest villages and rural areas. Today we can clearly see the downfall of NIRMA as many new trends have launched and occupied its space.
