Savji Dholakia: 15,000 crore Diamond Empire.

Have you seen in the news, a diamond businessman gives expensive gifts to their employees, like bonuses, cars and flats. In his interview he said he does not make diamonds, we make quality employees which later become diamonds. His story is inspirational and has created a legacy worth crores.

Diamonds are one of the precious jewels of the world. It takes abundance of time and procedure to make expensive diamond jewels. From raw diamonds to processing and exporting. In India, Surat is known as the Diamond City of India. We have the best skilled workers in the world and the labour cost is also less compared to other countries. Only Israel and Belgium were famous for diamond making and processing in those days. We used to import diamonds from other countries and process them in India.

Savji Dholakia was from Gujarat and during his childhood, he faced severe poverty and worked many odd jobs during his career. He always wanted to start his own business. Eventually, along with his brother, he started Hari Krishna exports diamond company. He signed a contract with his brothers, saying no matter what happens, the business wouldn't be separated or distributed among each other. He wanted everybody to be together through both ups and downs. Slowly, the business was growing with minimal resources. Dholakia identified the gap between diamonds and skilled workers. He himself was a worker and had gone through the whole process of hardwork and pain. During that crucial time government has identified the skilled workers of diamonds and reduced import duties on raw diamonds. This policy has changed everything. Dholakia started importing raw diamonds from African countries and processed diamonds in Surat. Today it is worth 15,000 crore net worth and is one of the most popular diamond processing units. They export diamonds to almost 110 countries across the world.

Strategies used by Dholokia for expanding his business.
* Contract with his own brothers to, not divide the business even in crisis. They still stay together, along with their families.
* Diamond processing requires a highly skilled labour force. If the diamond polishing is not done properly, overall business would impact. So Dholakia invests in his employees and makes their lives stable and financially strong.
* Diamond processing employees are strictly monitored for many days and eventually, once they become perfect in their skills, they will be given real diamonds, which are exported to the world.
* His next generation was also given tough tasks before giving them positions in his company. He sent both his sons to kochi and northeast. Asked them to work for 1 month in various jobs. To teach them the value of hard work, money and life. Once they cleared his tests, he appointed them as sales and board members in his company.
