Have you ever experienced problems while shifting and weren't able to find a truck driver, even if you find he asks for high charges for just 2 to 3 km. Every other person at one point of time had gone through issues with truck drivers and delivery services. Expensive charges, tracking issues, negotiation and unsafe delivery services. Seeing such a market gap across India, intercity logistics was highly important and lacked services. After seeing the same problems, Uttam and Pranav both started to start Porter. Inspired by the Uber, both have decided to solve a big problem faced by many.
The Journey
India spends 14% on logistics, whereas China spends 10% and the USA around 7%. It indicates the value of the logistics sector. The intracity logistics ideas initially started with mobile and excel sheets, where they used to meet local truck drivers and package delivery vehicles. It was a tough journey following traditional methods, talking to various local agents and members, and finally they met 500 truck drivers after a few months. The Excel sheet was filled with bigger numbers, which led them to open a website, a mobile application with tech-driven methods.
This led to more arrivals of truck drivers joining their portal across Mumbai and NCR region. The truck drivers had hectic lives. They used to get orders hardly per day or nearly 2, and people used to negotiate and felt insecure about the delivery. Many trucks, while returning, never got their order back; 30% of trucks were under utilized. Seeing all these challenges across multiple places, including other industries, the model of delivery became popular.
Today, Porter has 35 major cities and is working in the UAE and Turkey, along with a massive network of 3 lakh gig workers with a net worth 8000 crore. It has solved a major problem in society by making life easy and quick without any problems in the delivery industry.
