Nehru Period vs Modi Period: India's Development Comparison

Nehru Period vs Modi Period: India's Development Comparison

India’s Independence was not that easy, from fighting against the British to partition.

The journey we had was never easy.. 700 years of Mughals and 200 years of British India.

During those conflicts, we had effective leaders and popular personalities who handled those important political, Social, economic things…..

But what about India after 1947 ?

Right now, we are in 2026 and seeing all those developments and the new world alltogether.

Have you ever compared both leaders of 1947 and 2026 ? Have you ever thought of it ?

What about the Nehru regime and what about the current situation of the Modi government ?

How are these 2 leaders being compared too ?

How have they handled India as per the time ?

India got its independence after a long struggle and pain.

So Let's start with 1947. India had 34 crore with minimal resources, with only 2% graduates and 89% illiterate. India had a budget of 171.5 crore for the first ever time. With conflicts from caste to religion and partition, millions of people were migrating from India and Pakistan. We didn't even have a constitution. 500 princely states were also creating ruckus, especially Hyderabad Nizam and Junagarh king. The biggest thing is the population, which is not well-educated and skilled.

During such circumstances, there have been developments in creating a new system of institutions like IIT’s, AIMS, ISRO. They have been building India from the grassroots. Nehru truly followed democratic principles. He initiated Non-alignment at the time of the Cold War, which was happening in the world between the USA and the USSR. There were 2 groups with support from multiple countries each.

Major criticism

* Nehru alloted the indian territory Aksai Chin to china, the Sino and Indian war, as he ignored warning signs of the initial phase.

* In J&K conflicts  he gave free hand of Plebiscite and supported free autonomy.

*Directly made Indira Gandhi into politics and made her the president of Congress, which was criticized as nepotism.

Right now, the Modi government, which was formed in 2014. He is the tallest leader of the BJP till now,
He became the prime minister and crossed Nehru, the tallest leader of congress leader's record as the longest serving leader of India.

After he became prime minister, the circumstances were different. The population is around 140 crore with a budget of, as of today, 34 lakh crore budget in the year 2025.

He majorly focused on social welfare schemes, which were never addressed before, from basic facilities like gas connections, toilets, girl child education, Digital India, electricity, water and houses. These welfare policies were on a large scale, which people wanted also. Basic needs were their 100% focus.

Whenever the issues of India and Pakistan have emerged, they have dealt with an extremely aggressive nature, from diplomacy to military operations like URI, Pulwama, Operation sindoor, Article 370 removal.
Construction of Ram Mandir, GST reforms, CAA and NRC, use of technology for the largest sections. Electronic governance and approach were extremely modernized compared to before. From new railways to 100 new airports and smart cities. Their tenure is around 16 years which is purely on policy and external affairs are the agenda.

Major Criticism

Demontisation, COVID-handling, dictatorship, the crisis of the economy and the highest unemployment rate ever reported.
Politics of religion and hyper-nationalism.

Between the Nehru era, it was the initial stage, and Modi’s era, it was about expansion and regulating.

Both have played crucial roles during their own tenures, but ultimately, India’s growth and development are important for us.
