Electricity plays a significant role, every other sector is dependent on power. Industries, data centers, EV, urbanization, real estate and semiconductors everything requires power. As the population of India is growing, the requirement has also increased. We produce electricity from various sectors, like coal 41%, solar 30%, wind 11%, hydropower 11% and bio 7%.
Historically, since the beginning, we have been using coal as a major source of power generation. Due to the lack of natural resources, there might be a crisis in the next 50 years or probably 100 years. Coal mines would be reduced with time. By seeing this concerning situations, the government has decided to make major changes by bringing in new initiatives to protect and enhance power. As of today, India produces 1694 billion units, which is sufficient for survival. We fulfill all our needs and do not take any support from any other nation.
The energy security which we currently have has high complexity. Let's understand it clearly that coal has limited capacity, wind power is totally dependent on climatic conditions and not possible in every other place. When it comes to hydropower, it is expensive and requires a lot of approval from the government and requires environmental clearance along with geographical challenges, making it a tough task. The total time span to generate electricity from starting to ending requires at least 8 to 9 years based on the project. So the government decided to invest more in solar energy due to easy and quick generation of power, making it the most reliable source of energy.
Solar power makes quick and fastest energy production. It can be easily made in India as most of it is dependent on sunlight and India has almost 8 months of sunlight constantly. The revenue which is spent on solar is the cheapest compared to other sources. The government has also launched smart policies for solar power, like PM Surya Ghar. Many states can easily produce solar energy, making it the most useful resource and a never-ending natural resource.
The solar projects have begun across India and are supplying solid energy supply. The drawbacks to solar energy are, most of the panels are made in China. We lack storage capacities and the supply chain of grids to substations, making it hard for traditional power supply and storage. The people who use solar power have fewer bills and would bring long-term benefits for the power sector along with growth and economic boost.
