New Rules Give Centre Power Over Airfares

The Centre has notified the Bharatiya Vayuyan Niyam, 2026, allowing temporary intervention in airline tariffs during extraordinary situations in the public interest. Effective January 1, 2027, the rules also require airlines to clearly disclose ticket fares, taxes, fees, cancellation charges and refund conditions. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) will monitor airline tariffs. However, the rules do not introduce a permanent cap on airfares, and airlines will continue to set prices under normal market conditions.
