The halt on delimitation bill, a discourse on democratic threats.
The Lok Sabha voted against the delimitation with Ayes 278, Noes 211, and the total numbers voted 489. It shows how important the delimitation bill has impacted towards a democratic threat. The union government placed 3 bills in the Lok Sabha on delimitation of the expansion of 850 seats from 543 seats, along with the women's reservation bill.
The bill was halted due to lack of majority to pass the bill. The ruling government has given justification by saying that the government intended to support women by giving them rights to participate in political procedures and become a part of decision-making. The government leadership made scathing allegations against the congress party by accusing them of being humiliating and against women's support.
It is to stop the progress of our country. Congress has always stood against development, said PM Modi.
Reasons why the opposition voted against this important bill ?
The opposition claims that the bill was cleverly placed just before the election to woo the voters of Bengal. The bill was diverted to women's issues, but the bill wanted to introduce a delimitation process of increasing seats which has a deep impact on states with a lower population. If the delimitation happens, it will be a threat to democracy, as per the opposition claims, as most of the seats would increase only in northern states.
The representation of lower population states would only lose its autonomy. The states like Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, would have more seats due to the high population, which would only favour the ruling government to be in power permanently. The southern leaders have taken major criticism on the delimitation like the Tamil Nadu chief minister said we would protest on a massive scale and many leaders have said it was to reduce the role of southern states in the political spectrum.
