Biocon Story of Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw.

Biocon Story of Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw.

There was a time when women never had an opportunity for a job, and most women were at home due to traditional norms. Kiran was born in Bangalore, and her parents supported her in pursuing education. After pursuing her education, she moved to Australia to pursue higher education and eventually started working as a brewer. After gaining significant experience, she moved back to India, but she never got a job due to being a woman, as it was male-dominated back then. Eventually, she moved to Ireland and started working there. She met her husband, who was also the co-founder of Biocon.

She always wanted to start her business in India, but due to a lack of resources and support, she could never make it. Instead of picking up a job, she courageously decided to establish her business at her home with just 10,000 rupees. She started becoming an expert in her chosen field of biotech. She started making enzymes for food products and eventually started exporting them to the US and Canada. Business people never understood her work, and the subject was also difficult. Slowly, from food, she moved to biopharmaceuticals. There was a time when she had no capital and had to rely on loans and investors.

Her Biocon Limited makes medicines that are affordable to everyone. They are prepared based on chemical drugs, physical properties, dosage, and their overall impact on the human body. Biocon’s main products include biosimilars, generic drugs, and advanced biologic therapies that address areas like diabetes, oncology, and immunology. Today, Biocon has a market capitalization of 71,058 crores and exports products to 120 countries.
