A simple idea saved time of millions: The story of Inshorts

How the techbased platform took over all news agencies with just 60 words content.

Early morning, whenever you read a 22-page newspaper, don't you feel impatient ? The cost of time is more expensive in today's world, more than anything. Many of us have a habit of knowing, what is happening around us. Due to lethargy, we avoid or just reading the headlines and editorial pages just to feel we read something today.

Only serious aspirants of UPSC and government employees read most of the newspapers. The interest in newspapers has drastically gone down after technology taking over every traditional method we had used before. Innovation and creativity has made things quick and simpler, trying to cut time from every activity.

3 students from IIT Delhi one fine day, while sitting in the library, started reading the newspaper.

How can we read this 22-page paper? We need something which is short and quick news ? That idea hit the brain. We need a platform for short news. Azhar Iqubal and his friends started working on this project with just a facebook page. Writing and publishing news on facebook, which quickly gained followers and viewership. The page started getting to reach things which they didn't expect at all. Then, due to the skills which they had, they started developing applications for the news content. Within a few days of hustle the application was built in the playstore.

The strategy

Publishing news within just 60 words, which is hardly a paragraph and explaining what the entire news is about. Within 15 minutes you can read almost all the important short brief news articles from anywhere on your mobile. By walking, while traveling anywhere with just a few swipes, you can read the entire story. The downloads of the app started getting high downloads. Today in the store it has 10million downloads. Almost 7.5 crore users actively visit on a monthly basis just to read it. Inshorts are available in 10+ languages today. It's net worth is 3,700 crore valuation.

How inshorts make revenue based on short news.

Inshorts publish content based on user requirements and market their ads below the news content. As it has a strong user base and viewership, the sponsorship works effectively. From advertisements to collaboration with companies. As inshorts average spending time is around 12 minutes on the platform, it promotes partnerships with Uber, Netflix, Airtel and many other local brands that pay a high premium to promote their companies and products. Their simple idea of advertising, they charge about 10 to 15 lakhs and for magazines they charge about 20 lakhs per day to promote.

Along with inshorts, they started experimenting on other things, like launching a Public app, a location-based news platform for hyper-local communities, touching the grassroots of India, from the deepest of villages.
The public app gives district level and city-wise news in your location about situations happening, by creating short videos on updates like water issues, traffic jams, and the smallest problems in your locality are provided.
Local institutions in villages and districts use it for providing evidence-based information and promoting an event with the help of local reporters. The content that is published can be done by yourself in your own language, which is comfortable for your access.
It also features local jobs, opportunities and weather updates for people.

The business works almost on high viewership and downloads of the application. As Azhar comes from a small town and experienced highs and lows, he has been satisfied by the impact he is creating with news within 60 words with authentic news to millions of people.
